The world's oldest Pastel Society

The world's oldest, the Société des Pastellistes de France was created in 1885 , under impulse of its first President, Albert Besnard of the Académie Française.

The Society counted among its Members world famous artists such as Degas, Puvis de Chavannes, Toulouse-Lautrec, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Chenet, Henri Gerveix of Académie Française and many other major pastelists.

Prestigious international exhibitions were organised such as the Salons of Paris and the Pavillon of Pastel at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, all inaugurated by the President of the French Republic.

Jean-Pierre Mérat is the President of the Society of Pastelists of France, since 1984.

The Press qualified the Exhibitions of Society as an “ Incredible Success” and Who's Who In international Art pays homage to it's role in the renaissance of pastel art in Europe .

Only 20 years ago, for the majority of Europeans, pastel was an art piously preserved in Museums and practically absent from any artistic event.

European, American, English, Canadian, Australian, Russian or Japanese, professional pastelists were perfectly unknown in Europe .

The Society presents top quality works of both professional pastelists and emerging artists from France and abroad .

Since 1984 its Exhibitions along with the International Pastel Festival reveal the art of pastel to thousands of enthusiastic visitors.

The Society honours prestigious French and foreign professional artists with dignifying title of “Master Pastelist” , which has only been granted to 20 people since 1984 (Among the foreign Master Pastelists : Gwenneth Barth USA , Ken Paine, Peter Thomas, Margaret Glass England , Alberto Italy , J. Garcia Spain , S. Oussik Russia , Eiko Yoshimoto Japan, etc.)
